York Faber Shield Match Reports 2006~07

This page contains links to the match reports written by Colin Robinson. Unfortunately the Evening Press do not appear to be adding these reports to their web site as often as they have done in previous years. As a result I have also added reports of my own below. Obviously these reports concentrate on the matches I have been involved in. I rely heavily on word of mouth for the other match reports. As such I have added a new Submit Results page which allows you to send me the details of any match results and add any information that will be useful for me to write a match report - what's more you don't even need an email address to send me the details!

September 2006 Reports

September 6th 2006 - Faber Shield Billiards Round-Up

Defending champions Fulford got off to a bad start in their defence of the Faber Shield losing their opening game 4-3 to Heworth. Fulford, who have been struggling to raise a team for both Billiards and Snnoker this year, had been considering withdrawing from the league but decided to fulfill their fixtures as best they can. Wayne Puleston ran out with a 29 break to win the opener for Fulford 150-128 against Brian Birch. Dave Birch levelled the match with a 150-91 win over Richard Stroughair. Birch (who started off 60) started strongly with an early 17 break before Stroughair (who started off -30) made a 37 and several smaller breaks to close to 98-76 behind. However Birch made a 21 break to pull clear again before clinching a deserved victory.

Vic Gamble added the next for Heworth with victory over Roger Gibson before Alan Reed levelled the game once more in defeating Keith Watkinson. Colin Neal put Fulford ahead with victory over Martin Bryant before Mick Frampton won a close final game againt Bob Plant - with Plant missing a pot red for the match. Jason Milner won the opener against Bob Smith before Shaun Elliott levelled the match with a win over Mark Winskill. Steve Burdett put Heworth ahead once more with victory over John Adcock but Nigel Smith levelled matters once more with his win over Rich Burdett. Ray Thackway played well to defeat Les Hawkins champion Tony Tennyson, to put Fulford ahead for the first time. However, Clive Whyte levelled the game making a 39 break en-route to beating Arthur Pegden before Gall took the decider comfortably against Lewis Willie.

Meanwhile Bootham A moved in to second spot in the league following a 5-2 win at Acomb B. Ian Gillies and Steve Thompson won for Acomb A with Ray Stamp, Tony Lambert, Chris Dawson, George Long and Paul Mahoney replying for Bootham B.

In the other game, Fulford A won 5-2 at Heworth B despite playing a number of reserve players. It was a strange match where a number of frames could quite easily have gone the other way. Daz Colledge won the opener for Heworth B with victory over Wayne Puleston. Colledge looked set for a straight forward win after making a 23 break from a fluke mid-way through the frame but Puleston fought back well only to miss a straight forward black that would have earned him a tie and respotted black. Glen Mountain held on to defeat Brian Birch in the next to level the game, after Birch looked set to pinch the frame before rattling the brown in the yellow ball pocket. Dave Birch looked to have added the next for Heworth B when leading by 28 with just one red remaining. However, Richard Stroughair layed a snooker and then took the last red, blue and the colours to pink before missing a tricky black for a 33 clearance to steal the frame. Birch then attempted the black only to miss and see the white go in-off to hand Stroughair the victory. In the next Pete Dunmore cleared with a 22 break to defeat Vic Gamble before Sam England comfortably defeated Shaun Parker (despite a 22 break from Parker) to ensure victory for Fulford A. Mal Harrison reduced the deficit with a close fought win over Alan Reed before Roger Gibson won the final frame against Mick Frampton after Frampton went in-off the final pink.

November 22nd 2006 - Carlsberg-UK Snooker Round-Up

Defending champions Heworth A maintained their 100% start to the season coming from 3-2 behind to record a 4-3 win at home to Acomb A. Both opening games went to re-spotted blacks with Jason Milner defeating Marcus O'Boyle and Pete Lawson defeating Steve Burdett - his first loss of the season. Kevin Gall won a tight game against Ian Gilles (who also lost his first game of the season) in the next before Keith Myers levelled the game with a win over Rich Burdett. Trevor Ventress put Acomb A 3-2 up with a win over Mark Winskill but wins from Clive Whyte (against Barry Manson) and Chris Thompson (over Richard Harris) in the final games secured the victory for Heworth A

Bootham A remained in second place in the table by virtue of a 4-3 win away at Fulford A. Fulford A had only 3 players in attendance at the start of the match and had to call on 2 debutantes in order to field a team. The first of these (Tom Wilson) won the opening frame against Nick Parker but Ken Taylor levelled the match with victory over Wayne Puleston. Richard Stroughair looked set to clear with a 69 break against Tim Fillingham in the next but having done the hard work, overran position on the final red by a fraction. However the 34 break paved the way for Stroughair to defeat Tim Fillingham and give Fulford the lead once more. Mark Darley levelled the game once more with victory over Pete Dunmore before victories for Colin Robinson (over Sam England) and Brian Coulson (over Mike Reid who also played his first game for Fulford) secured victory for Bootham A. However, Alan Reed took a consolation final frame against Barry Rankin to make the final score 4-3 to Bootham A. Reed won what in the end was a battle of temperament rather than technique to inflict the first defeat of the season on Rankin. Reed started well and a combination of good potting and bad luck for Rankin saw him storm into a 40 point lead. However, roles were reversed towards the end of the frame as Reed began to let things get to him and Rankin reduced the arrears. However, Reed hung on as Rankin played a number of snookers and eventually doubled the blue to put the frame beyond doubt.
